Strong communities are built through shared effort, with neighbors, organizations and volunteers working together to create meaningful change. Across Iowa, these organizations continue to make an impact every day, supported by individuals and teams who help bring their missions to life.
United Way of Mahaska County brings people together to address some of the community’s most important needs, focusing on education, financial stability, and health as the foundation for long-term success. By connecting local nonprofits, volunteers and resources, the organization works to create lasting solutions that strengthen the entire community.
Programs and partnerships supported by United Way help fill gaps for families and individuals across Mahaska County, from access to basic needs to opportunities that support long-term growth and stability. Their work is rooted in collaboration, bringing together community members who are committed to making a difference.
At this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Meal, several individuals and teams were recognized for their dedication to that mission. Among them were members of the Bank Iowa team, including individuals honored for their leadership, service and ability to inspire others to get involved. Their recognition reflects how volunteer efforts continue to strengthen both the organization and the community.

Meals from the Heartland empowers people to take an active role in fighting hunger by packaging and distributing meals to those in need, both close to home and around the world. Through volunteer-driven events, the organization provides a hands-on way for communities to come together and make an immediate impact.
By combining education, engagement and service, Meals from the Heartland raises awareness about hunger while providing meals designed to support individuals facing food insecurity. Volunteers of all ages play a role in making that impact possible.
During a recent packaging event in Humboldt County, Bank Iowa team members joined local students and community volunteers to support that mission. Together, the group reached an incredible milestone by helping package the two millionth meal box in the program’s history, showing how collective action can make a global difference.

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is dedicated to protecting animal welfare, strengthening the bond between people and pets and creating opportunities for animals to find safe, loving homes. Through services such as adoption, training, rescue and outreach, the organization serves thousands of animals and families across the state each year.
In addition to providing shelter and care, the ARL focuses on education and prevention to address the root causes that lead animals to need assistance. Their work helps ensure more animals remain safe, healthy and part of a caring home.
Support from the community plays a key role in making that work possible. A recent $2,000 donation from Bank Iowa, driven by a team-led initiative, helps further the ARL’s mission and supports the ongoing care of animals across Iowa.
